Discourse Analysis Two
Gae-Lynn Woods. “Why is it important to do volunteer work?” August. 2010. Livestrong Foundation. February 22, 2011.
In Wysocki’s writing he talks the different styles of text there are out there and how different people may interprets them. He explains why different texts have different meaning to certain people and where you should use certain types and where you should not. For instance, different styles of types, colors, and sizes all make a difference in the way people look at them and interpret their meanings. All throughout his writing he explains, that all these different styles of texts are what really sticks out in someone’s writing and is what will catch a reader’s attention and could get them interested in your writing. So, using the right types of texts for the right circumstances, because if they are then you will gain interest in what the author is writing will allow you to gain interest in their writing and you will be able to gain a better understanding of what the author is really trying to say.
In Wood’s writing, she talks about volunteer work and what it’s all about, and the affect it has on the people in need. All throughout her writing she explains the different types of volunteer work there are around the world, and what benefits you will gain if you do work as a volunteer in a field that you have interest in. She also tells about some of the misconceptions that go on, when people think of volunteer work. Many people think that volunteer work is just a waste of your free time, but if you volunteer for something that you are interested in, you could be greatly benefited from the service you are providing for those in need. Volunteer work can benefit you in many ways, especially in a work environment, because if you have volunteer work on your resume it just shows that you are willing to work for the sake of others. I think that all these points of volunteer work are very important to everyone, simply because volunteer work is something that shows you care for others in need and you are will to sacrifice your time in order to help them out.
As I tied Wysocki’s writing and my reading together, I began to realize that this reading had just the plain type of font in 12 font, which in most cases is going to focus towards an older audience, so this allows the author to show who he is focusing his writing towards and what parts they want people to understand in their writing. I also noticed that all the headings had a different style of font than all the other information in the author’s writing, which just shows that the author is trying to state a point and trying to keep the readers interested in their writing. By changing the font size, color, and look in an article really sends out different messages from the author and allows the author to state different points and allows them to make their writing more interesting and fun to read. This also shows that if an author does a good job at using the different styles of font in their writing then they will be able to focus on the audience they want and be able to make it clear and interesting to those it’s focused towards.
