Reflective Bog Entry #1
Last Friday I spent 3 hours serving at the Discovery Center, during my time doing so I did not accomplish as much as I had hoped. When I arrived to the DC, I could tell it was not a very busy day so there were not many people wandering around exploring the exhibits etc. I estimated around 30 guests were visiting that day scattered about in one of the 4 large rooms the DC is made of. I spent my time wandering around the facility asking patrons for assistance and looking for things to fix, however no one really cared for help and replied with a quick "We're fine" followed by a brief smile. Using this an opportunity to observe patrons in the facility, I walked around watching people's interactions with each exhibit and how they went about doing so. Generally, due to the simplicity of many of the exhibits, people were able to approach each exhibit without needing to read the directions to perform each operation. Most approached each exhibit, giving the labels a brief look over, then executed each exhibit's purpose; if the user failed to complete the desired operation, they would briefly look over the labeling. Overall, my time spend at the DC was pretty boring however I believe when more people are at the facility, there will be many opportunities to further my investigation of my research topic.
